EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has fully accepted the ₦70,000 new minimum wage proposed by the federal government during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Thursday.

The communique, signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, stated that the NEC, after extensive deliberations, unanimously accepted the ₦70,000 new minimum wage offer and the three-year review of the figure. The statement also commended the leadership of the congress and its handling of negotiations leading to the new minimum wage announcement.

The NEC further demanded the full and strict implementation of the National Minimum Wage 2024 once it becomes law. The NLC explained that although the final figure is lower than the union’s initial demand, it accepted the offer to prevent a threatened hike in petrol prices, which would exacerbate the hardships faced by Nigerians.

The NLC thereafter reiterated its commitment to defending the rights of the Nigerian worker and Nigerian people at all times.

Recalls President Tinubu on Thursday, after a meeting with the labour leaders in Abuja, announced the ₦70,000 new minimum wage offer.

The President is expected to forward a bill to the National Assembly for the lawmakers to ratify the figure.
