10 Facts You Didn’t Know About Prince Philip

Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip, was pronounced dead on Friday by the Buckingham Palace.

He had recently spent more than a month in the hospital and underwent a heart procedure.

Below are the 11 facts you didn’t know about the late Queen’s husband:

  1. Prince Philip, formally known as Duke of Edinburgh, was born on 10 June 1921 into the Greek and Danish royal families.
  2. Philip joined the British Royal Navy in 1939 at the age of 18 after being educated in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
  3. He tied the knot with Queen Elizabeth on 20 November 1947.
  4. He was granted permission by King George VI to marry Elizabeth after the couple met in 1934.
  5. Before the official announcement of their engagement in July 1947, Philip abandoned his Greek and Danish titles and styles to become a naturalised British and adopted his maternal grandparents’ surname, Mountbatten.
  6. Philip was a patron, president, or member of over 780 organisations.
  7. He left active military service when Elizabeth became queen in 1952, having reached the rank of commander before being made a British Prince in 1957.
  8. Philip had four children with Queen Elizabeth: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.
  9. He was the longest-serving consort of a reigning British monarch and the longest-lived male member of the British royal family.
  10. Philip died on 9 April 2021 at the age of 99.
