10 Students Land in Hospital After Inhaling Poisonous Gas in Ibadan

In a recent incident at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, about 10 students were hospitalized after inhaling an unidentified gaseous substance during a fight between two students.

Eko Hot Blog reports that according to eyewitnesses, other students who tried to intervene were affected by the gas.

The Oyo State Government promptly responded to the emergency after receiving a distress call.

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, led an immediate emergency response, ensuring the affected students were evacuated and taken to Ring Road State Hospital and the University College Hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred at the Science Laboratory and Technology Department lecture hall, where students were seated after completing a course test.

“While others tried to stop the fight, an unknown choking substance was released into the air, allegedly sprayed by one of the students. This caused several students to collapse, while some lost consciousness. About 10 students were affected,” an eyewitness said.

Ajetumobi confirmed that the students affected by the gas inhalation have been stabilized and are receiving appropriate medical care.

He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation by the institution’s management to identify those responsible and ensure they are held accountable.

In light of this incident, the commissioner highlighted the significance of implementing sensitization programs for students to discourage violent and dangerous behaviour that could endanger lives. Such initiatives aim to promote a safe and secure environment for students to learn and thrive without fear of harm

“The Ministry of Health remains committed to ensuring the well-being of all Oyo State residents and will continue to respond promptly to health-related emergencies,” she reassured.
