11 Deadly Aviation Incidents in 2024; No 8 Will Shock You

The Jeju Air Boeing (NYSE:BA) 737-800 crash in Muan County on Sunday, which resulted in the deaths of 179 people, marks the deadliest aviation disaster in South Korea’s history.

Eko Hot Blog gathered that the incident occurred during a year that saw several significant aviation accidents worldwide.

Here are some of the biggest aviation accidents of 2024, listed in order of severity:

1. South Korea: Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, a Boeing 737-800, crashed on December 29th, killing all 175 passengers and 4 out of the 6 crew members on board. It’s a sad aviation incident that the world mourns.

2. Brazil: Voepass Flight 2283, an ATR-72 turboprop, crashed in August in the town of Vinhedo, resulting in the deaths of all 62 people on board.

In a separate events, a small private plane, a twin-engine Piper PA-42-1000, crashed into shops in the tourist city of Gramado in southern Brazil, leading to the loss of 10 lives.

3. Kazakhstan : On December 25, 2024, Azerbaijan Airlines international flight J2-8243, an Embraer E190, crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan.

The plane was on its way from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, when it went down, killing 39 people and leaving 29 survivors. The cause of the crash has not been officially confirmed, but some reports suggest that the plane was hit by missiles fired by a Russian air-defense system.

4. Nepal: The Saurya Airlines CRJ-200 aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport on July 24, 2024.

The plane was carrying 19 people, including 17 technicians and two crew members, and was headed to Pokhara for maintenance work.

Unfortunately, 18 people were killed in the crash, with the captain being the sole survivor.

5. Malawi: On June 10th, 2024, Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and nine others were killed when the military plane they were travelling in crashed en route from Lilongwe to Mzuzu.

The crash site was located in the Chikangawa Forest Reserve in Mzimba District, and all passengers onboard perished on impact

6. Thailand :On August 22nd, 2024, a Cessna Caravan C208B aircraft operated by Thai Flying Service Co, carrying nine people, crashed shortly after takeoff from Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.

The plane was on a domestic charter flight to Trat, but it lost contact with air traffic control about 10 minutes into the flight and crashed in the Bang Pakong district of Chachoengsao province, about 100 km southeast of Bangkok.

Unfortunately, all nine people onboard, including five Chinese tourists and four Thai nationals (including the two pilots), were killed in the crash.

 

7. Iran: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and five other passengers and crew members, were killed when their U.S.-made Bell 212 helicopter crashed in the mountainous terrain of the Varzeqan region, near the Azerbaijan border.

The helicopter was part of a convoy of three helicopters, two of which arrived safely at their destination. The people of Iran sees it as one of the deadliest aviation accident in history.

8. United States of America

On February 9, 2024, near Halloran Springs, California. The Eurocopter EC 130B4 helicopter, operated by Orbic Air LLC of Burbank, was flying from Palm Springs International Airport to Boulder City, Nevada, when it crashed around 10:08 pm (Pacific Standard Time).

The crash resulted in the deaths of all six people on board, including Herbert Wigwe, the CEO  Access Bank, a major Nigeria Bank, his wife, and son. It remains one of the most sad aviation a accident.

9. Canada: On January 23, 2024, a Northwestern Air plane crashed near Fort Smith, Canada, killing six people—four passengers and two crew members—and leaving one survivor with severe burns. The plane was carrying workers to Rio Tinto’s Diavik diamond mine at the time of the crash.

10. Japan: A Japan Airlines (JAL) Airbus A350-941 plane collided with a smaller Japan Coast Guard aircraft on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.

All 379 passengers and crew aboard the JAL plane were able to escape the burning airliner, but sadly, five of the six crew members on the smaller Coast Guard aircraft lost their lives.

The incident was later determined to have been caused by human error, as the pilot and co-pilot of the Coast Guard plane mistakenly believed they had clearance to enter the runway just before the collision occurred.

11. Singapore: Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 encountered severe turbulence while flying from London to Singapore.

The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, was forced to divert to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport due to the turbulence. Sadly, a 73-year-old British passenger passed away, and many others were injured, some critically.

It was reported that the plane dropped 178 feet in less than a second during the turbulence, causing chaos and injuries in the cabin.
