11-Year-Old Girl Rescued After 3 Days in Mediterranean

An 11-year-old girl was rescued after clinging to tyre tubes for three days in stormy Mediterranean weather. Rescuers from Compass Collective heard her calls for help while on their way to another emergency.

The girl, from Sierra Leone, was traveling with 44 others from Tunisia when their boat sank. She is the only survivor, as the others are presumed dead. Thousands of migrants die each year trying to reach Europe via the Mediterranean.

She explained that her boat sank quickly in a storm, and she lost contact with two others. She was handed over to Italian authorities on Lampedusa, where she was able to walk and talk.

The IOM reports that 30,955 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean over the past 10 years. Italy has received over 63,000 migrants this year, though numbers have dropped due to strict policies by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government.
