13 Dead as Herdsmen Attack Benue Community in Early Morning Raid
Tragedy struck the Azege settlement in Mbaya, Tombo Ward, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, as suspected herdsmen launched a deadly early morning attack on Sunday, claiming 13 lives and leaving many injured.
The assailants, armed with sophisticated weapons, stormed the community around 7 a.m., targeting residents as they prepared for church service. Witnesses described the attack as brutal and coordinated, with women and children among the casualties.
Farmlands were also destroyed in the raid, further threatening the livelihoods of the predominantly farming community. Survivors lamented the devastating loss of lives and crops, warning of worsening food insecurity in the area.

Hon. Benjamin Uzenda, the immediate past Caretaker Chairman of Logo Local Government and a native of Azege, confirmed the incident, revealing that the community has faced similar attacks in recent months.
“This is the third attempt by herdsmen to overrun Azege in two months,” Uzenda said. “This time, it was particularly horrific, with 13 people killed and homes destroyed. Many residents have fled for fear of further attacks.”

Security forces reportedly arrived after the assailants had fled. The injured were transported to the Ayilamo Primary Health Centre for medical attention, while local authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage.
The Chairman of Logo Local Government, Hon. Clement, is expected to visit the scene as the community appeals for stronger security measures to prevent future attacks.
This incident adds to the growing insecurity in the region, with residents calling for urgent government intervention to protect vulnerable communities.
