13 Dead As Indian Naval Speedboat Collides With Passenger Ferry Near Mumbai

At least 13 people have died after an Indian naval speedboat lost control and collided with a passenger ferry off Mumbai’s coast, according to a navy spokesperson.

Among the deceased are three navy personnel. More than 100 passengers were rescued from the water, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed.

Video footage shared online shows the speedboat circling erratically before crashing into the ferry, which subsequently capsized. The Indian Navy attributed the incident to an “engine malfunction.”

The privately operated ferry was en route to the Elephanta Caves, a popular tourist destination, when the collision occurred.

In a statement, the navy explained, “A navy craft undergoing engine trials lost control and collided with a passenger ferry,” expressing regret over the “tragic loss” of life.

A passenger aboard the ferry recounted the ordeal to ABP Majha news channel: “The speedboat crashed into our boat, water started pouring in, and then it overturned. The driver asked us to wear lifejackets.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, stating: “The boat mishap in Mumbai is saddening. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon.”
