At least 14 people have lost their lives after a concrete canopy collapsed at a railway station in Novi Sad, northern Serbia, according to President Aleksandar Vučić. Among the victims was a young girl, aged six or seven.

The incident occurred around noon local time (11:00 GMT) as people sat on benches under the station’s outdoor overhang.

Serbian broadcaster RTS reported that three people are hospitalized, including two women who were pulled from the rubble hours after the collapse.

Addressing the nation, President Vučić expressed hope that the death toll would not exceed 14, noting that five of the deceased remain unidentified. “Those responsible, I assure you, will be punished,” he said, as quoted by AFP.

Around 80 rescuers are working with heavy machinery to continue the search effort. The railway station had undergone renovations in 2021 and again this year, though the canopy, originally built in 1964, was not part of these refurbishments, according to Railway Infrastructure of Serbia.
