The tragedy adds to a growing list of knife-crime incidents in London. In August, an 11-year-old girl was severely injured in Leicester Square, with a 32-year-old man subsequently arrested.
In September, a teenager was killed in the same Woolwich area in what authorities described as gang-related violence.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has labeled knife crime a “national crisis.” Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed his condolences on social media.
“My thoughts are with the family, friends, and wider community in Greenwich following the appalling fatal stabbing of a 14-year-old boy.”
Matthew Pennycook, Labour MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, echoed the sentiment, saying he was “deeply saddened that yet another young life has been lost in our community.”
Statistics from the Office for National Statistics show a four percent rise in knife crime in England and Wales in the year leading up to June, although rates remain below pre-pandemic levels.
The Labour government, in office since July, has pledged to cut knife crime by half over the next decade.
