Authorities reported that the attacker, who was present at the school before the shooting, was found dead at the scene. Six students were injured, including two who sustained life-threatening injuries.
The first call about the active shooter came from a second-grade student, according to Chief Barnes.
“Today is a sad day not only for Madison but for our entire country,” Chief Barnes remarked. “We have to do a better job in our community.”
Authorities have not yet determined the motive behind the shooting, and the suspect’s family is cooperating with the investigation.
The police also have not clarified how the attacker acquired the firearm.
The alleged shooter was named as Natalie Rupnow, also known by the name Samantha. It is believed that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The official cause of death will be confirmed by the Dane County Medical Examiner following an autopsy.
Chief Barnes stated that, to the best of his knowledge, the police had no prior interactions with the suspect. Officers responded to the 911 call about the shooter at around 11:00 AM local time (17:00 GMT) on Monday.
