Rabid Lion Kills 4, Injures Others Near Nigerian Border
No fewer than four persons were killed and several others injured after a lion on the rampage attacked a community close to the Nigerian border.
EKO HOT BLOG gathered that the lion attacked residents of a Cameroonian town of Makary on Thursday, February 25, a few clicks away from encampments of Nigerian troops.
Makary is a town in Logone-et-Chari, Far North Region of Cameroon adjacent to Gamboru Ngala, Borno State in Northeast Nigeria.
Albeit the lion was ultimately subdued and killed by local vigilantes, there is increasing fear that more lions could be lurking around the area where the incident happened.
It remains unclear if the lion was part of a pack that strayed from their enclaves in Waza park or Sambisa game reserves in Cameroon and Nigeria, respectively.
According to reports, the military is worried about the threat wild lions pose to troops in the frontline locations of Gamboru, Wulgo, Ngala and Rann general areas in Gamboru Ngala and Kala Balge Local Governments Areas of Borno.
Recall that in 2020, a group of elephants migrated to Rann in Kala Balge Local Government, which led to a conflict between the pack and the local community.
The elephant herd were first sighted in December 2019, after they were photographed from a United Nations helicopter which was embarking on a routine humanitarian mission flight over Rann.
The elephant population in the region usually migrated between Waza Park in Far North Cameroon and Kalamaloue National Park near Chari River in Chad.
Another sub-group also migrates south into the adjacent Chad Basin Park in Nigeria before returning to Waza Park.
It is reported that the herd movement and presence in Nigeria has been significantly affected by human activity.
