It was a tragic scene in Odomola community, Epe Division, Tuesday evening after an over-speeding Toyota Camry belonging to suspected internet fraudsters (Yahoo Boys) driving under the influence knocked down a 12-year old girl.
The victim of the tragic accident, a 12-year old girl whose name was unknown as at the time of filing this report, was said to have been sent on an errand by her mother when the sad incident occurred.
EKO HOT BLOG gathered that as the teenage girl stood on the culvert in the middle of the Epe-Ijebu-Ode expressway, waiting to cross to the other side, the alleged drunk driver swept her off. The car was said to be at top speed which made the driver lose control at the sharp bend of the expressway situated immediately after Government Technical College, Odomola.
Sensing a backlash and possible lynching by angry residents and passers-by, the driver and up to three occupants of the car fled, leaving the visibly injured teenager lying helplessly on the road. All efforts to apprehend the culprits proved abortive.
There were initial rumours that the young girl had died due to profuse bleeding and several injuries sustained on the head, but EKO HOT BLOG confirmed from her relatives at Epe General Hospital Emergency Ward, that she was stable after being attended to by doctors on duty.
It was also gathered that she was being prepared for transfer to another medical centre in Lagos for further medical care due to several injuries sustained to the head.
Earlier at the accident scene, a disagreement had ensued between passers-by and residents on whether to set the car ablaze or not. While residents feared being questioned by the Police, some passers-by felt the perpetrators were being aided and abetted as their escape was suspicious.
“We won’t allow you people to set the car ablaze because when the Police visit the scene, we won’t be allowed to rest as we would be the ones invited for questioning after you would all have gone home. So, you can burn the car elsewhere but not here,” one of the residents said.
The car tyres were deflated after the discovery of Black Bullet, an alcoholic drink capable of inducing high levels of intoxication. Some documents which revealed the identity of the car owner were also found. These would no doubt help facilitate the investigation with a view to getting justice for the victim’s family.
