The accident involved a Toyota Hiace with registration number XA 690AKU. The passengers were burnt beyond recognition, while one individual sustained injuries.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer of the state-owned traffic agency, provided details in a statement from Abeokuta, the state capital. He explained that the accident was caused by a fire from petroleum motor spirit stored in a jerry can inside the vehicle.
According to Akinbiyi, the vehicle overturned after reaching a damaged section of the road, spilling the petroleum motor spirit. The fuel then came into contact with the exhaust pipe, igniting a fire that engulfed the vehicle.
The partially burnt and injured driver was taken to Rona Hospital in Ijebu Ode, while the deceased were deposited at the State Hospital Mortuary in Ijebu Ode.
