The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has commended the Lagos State Government for its achievement in the continuous fight against drug abuse, stating there’s a better level of sanity now.
Marwa gave the commendation during a visit to the Correctional Centre for Boys in the Isheri area of the state
He said: “I commend the Lagos State Government for the steps taken so far to sustain its fight against drug abuse. This centre (Correctional Centre for Boys) has helped in drug reduction and rehabilitation of persons that could have become victims of drug abuse.”
Marwa did acknowledge the problems faced by the state government some of which include inadequate vocational training centres and lack of adequate funds to upgrade the available ones. He noted that even the correctional facility for boys needs more funding as Lagos still has the highest prevalence of drug abuse in Nigeria due to its massive population,” EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
Segun Dawodu, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Olugbenga Ayoola Aina, reiterated that the government was not resting in its aggressive push to ward off drug abuse.
The commissioner highlighted that within the last two years, the state government has set up the Lagos State Kick Against Drug Abuse (LASKADA) campaign under the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, launched a 1000 Youth Walk Against Drug Abuse in the state and training of 100 field officers among other measures that have been set in motion.
The commissioner gave his assurances to the NDLEA boss of more commitment.
Dawodu said, “With dogged determination on our side and collaboration with the NDLEA, we will definitely triumph over this monster that has created fertile ground for different crimes to thrive in our society.”
