Zacatecas Governor David Monreal initially reported 24 deaths, but the state attorney general’s office later revised the toll to 19 fatalities in a public statement.
Authorities stated that an investigation is underway to locate and detain the driver of the tractor-trailer. Recovery efforts continued into the morning as some of the victims’ bodies had fallen into a ravine, a local official told Reuters.
Video footage captured rescue teams and security personnel, including military forces, securing the scene while recovery operations were underway.
The bus was en route to Ciudad Juarez, near the U.S.-Mexico border in Chihuahua state. None of the victims were migrants, according to the attorney general’s office.
