20 Coal Miners Killed In Southwestern Pakistan Attack

At least twenty coal miners have been killed in southwestern Pakistan during a nighttime assault by a group of heavily armed men who besieged their accommodations, according to police reports on Friday.

The attack, which began around 12:30 AM (1930 GMT Thursday), involved up to 40 assailants who unleashed gunfire on the miners for approximately half an hour before fleeing the scene, as confirmed by Asim Shafi, the police chief of the Duki district where the incident occurred.

“They had rocket launchers and hand grenades with them.”  Shafi added.

Kaleemullah Kakar, a senior government official in the district, also verified the number of casualties.

Balochistan, Pakistan’s poorest province, frequently sees attacks from separatist militant groups targeting natural resource extraction projects.

Many of these projects are financed and managed by foreign countries, particularly China, which these armed factions accuse of exploiting the region’s wealth.
