Over 20 workers narrowly escaped death today when a two-storey building under construction on Daily Independent Street, Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area, Delta State, collapsed.
The incident occurred during an early morning downpour. Daily Independent Street, located opposite Asaba Airport and leading to Vanguard Newspapers Press and the Nigeria Police Station (formerly SARS), saw residents thrown into panic as news of the collapse spread on Saturday morning.
EKO HOT BLOG gathered that some workers were trapped but have since been rescued, with ongoing efforts to locate any remaining individuals.
An anonymous worker at the scene reported that many workers were injured while jumping from the second deck to avoid being trapped, though some managed to escape unscathed.
The injured have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The site has been deserted by workers, and the site engineer is reportedly fleeing to evade arrest and the wrath of local residents.

The Estate Management team is on site, coordinating rescue efforts with the electricity taskforce, which has ordered the disconnection of power to the site.
As of now, the state government has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the total number of individuals affected.
Attempts to contact Hon. Godknows Agele, Commissioner for Housing, Delta State, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or messages.
An official from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), who identified himself as John, confirmed that rescue operations are underway.
“Our men are on the ground to help in the rescue mission,” he said.
