The President of Arewa Consultative Youth Forum , Yerima Shetimma, yesterday expressed displeasure over the outcome of 2019 general elections even as he accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC of playing the All Progressives Congress script.
Shetimma who spoke during a Geo-political mega rally in Lagos tagged, “#SaveOurDemocracy” said the kind of democracy playing out in the country was not what was envisaged, “we thought by now we would have gotten to another level, but from all indications, we are going backward as a country as far as election is concerned.
“2019 elections was characterized with mass rigging and that is abuse on the sensitivity of Nigerians. It will go down in history as the worst as it clearly shows a rape on democracy. If you look very well, people came out en masse and voted for what they wanted. But from all indications, you can see that the second election recorded poor turnout which is a clear indication that Nigerians were not happy.
“In term of integrity, you can see that no integrity because serious flop was recorded during the election. We are happy that the flag bearer of People’s Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar has gone to court.
“We won’t sit down and allow Nigerians to be run as if we are in the Banana Republic. INEC declared elections inconclusive in states where PDP is leading but very enthusiastic to declare states where APC won. We are not going to encourage one party system in Nigeria because their plan is to kill the opposition”.
Shetimma who is also the National Chairman of Nigerian Ethnic Nationality Youth Leaders Forum, said, “we intend to go across the six geo-political zones to speak to people and make them realise the consequences of what happened.
Corroborating his view, President, Yoruba Council of Youths Worldwide, Aremo Hassan said if the trend continued, “we may wake up one day and face the anger of Nigerians. People came out en mass to vote but what they did was to undermine the will of the people by subverting the true reflection of what people wanted and did what they wanted.”
Hassan added that the elections were also well monetized and it may signer danger to the development of the country,” monetizing elections kill the real essence of democracy. It will get to a time when foreigners will come and buy votes in this country. “
