  • The United Nations has pleaded on the Nigerian political parties and its candidates to respect the integrity of the peace accord that were signed prior to the elections.

  • The peace accord was coordinated by the National Peace Committee ahead of the 25th February polls.

  • All 18 political parties contesting for the general elections signed the agreement.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the United Nations has urged Nigerian political parties and candidates to honour their commitments under a peace accord that they signed on Wednesday, February 22.

The agreement was coordinated by the National Peace Committee (NPC) and signed by all 18 political parties, in preparation for the 2023 general elections.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

According to the agreement, all political parties must accept the outcome of the elections, and any grievances arising from the process should be channelled through legitimate means for redress. The UN has expressed its support for the accord and advised all parties to adhere to their commitments.

In a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria in New York, the UN Spokesperson, Stephanie Dujarric, confirmed that the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) has been engaging with key actors in the election process. Dujarric added that a top UN official is in contact with the NPC Chair and is “ready to leverage good offices to support quiet diplomacy efforts to urge key actors to respect their commitments”.

The Office of the Resident Coordinator Office and UNOWAS have already engaged with the main candidates, opposition leadership, and institutions to ensure a peaceful and credible election process. The UN is committed to supporting Nigeria in maintaining peace and stability during the upcoming elections.

Nigeria has a history of election-related violence, and the peace accord signed by the political parties aims to prevent such incidents from occurring in the upcoming election.
