EKO HOT BLOG reports that Lawmaker representing Epe Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Sylvester Oluwaseun Ogunkelu, has said that traditional rulers cannot be relegated to the background in Epe, as they facilitate the emergence of political office holders in the community.
This online media platform recalls that Hon. Oluwadahunsi, on Friday, May 27, emerged as the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, LAHA flagbearer in Epe.
Ogunkelu, who spoke with EKO HOT BLOG in an interview shortly after filling and submitting the INEC nomination form in the much anticipated 2023 general elections, said that the synergy between politicians and traditional leaders has implanted remarkable developmental strides of which Epe Constituency II is no exception.
He noted that the roles of the highly revered cultural custodians are critical to the development of their communities from time immemorial.
“From time immemorial, traditional rulers are our highly revered fathers. In the olden days, they assist in the nomination of trusted individuals which in turn facilitated the emergence of political office holders in their domain. Their inputs can not be relegated to the background in their communities, particularly in politics”
“Here in my constituency, anyone who undermines their political influence should be ready to go into political oblivion and that is why I revere them so much. They are my respected fathers and even when there are issues, I will surely find possible ways to resolve them amicably”
“In appreciation for my victory at the Primaries as the flag bearer of the APC in my constituency, Epe II, I have made it a point of duty to pay all the traditional rulers a courtesy visit in the coming days to solidify our chances of recording a resounding victory at the general elections.,” he stated.
While he stressed that the traditional rulers are key stakeholders in dictating the affairs of their communities he also pointed out that the people, including non-indigenes who reside in the same environment, must co-operate with the traditional rulers.
Earlier in the interview, Ogunkelu maintained that his first term of four years had availed him with worthwhile experiences which would propel him to perform creditably in the next dispensation.

“I must say it is highly imperative for me to up my game as regard service delivery to my people even as a Lawmaker saddled with the responsibility of making laws.
“I have realised that I need to be closer to my people, especially my political opponents. I have discovered that in the overall interest of the community to grow in leaps and bounds, it behoves me as their privileged representative to convince and win their hearts to my side. This, I believe, would foster unity, cohesion and a sense of belonging,” he said.
