2023: Gowon Intervenes, Reveals How Candidates For Presidential, Governorship Elections Should Be Selected
- Ahead of the 2023 elections, former head of state Gowon has made new recommendations on how candidates for elective positions should be selected
- Gowon advised that the presidency should be rotated among the country’s six major political regions
General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) has advocated for presidential zoning and rotation among the country’s six geopolitical zones.
According to the Nigerian Tribune, Gowon stated that this would allow Nigeria to experience peace and development.
Eko hot blog gathered that the elder statesman made this known at the weekend during the celebration of the 100 years anniversary of the Barewa Old Boys Association (BOBA) in Zaria, Kaduna state.
The former president also suggested that there should be two vice presidents, one from the president’s home zone and the other elected during the presidential election.
Gowon also recommended that governorship seats be rotated among each state’s three senatorial districts at the subnational level.

This, he claims, will help to alleviate the burden and cry for marginalization.
He stated that no ethnic group is better outside the country than inside the country as one united Nigeria, and that insecurity is causing the northern region to have a negative image.
Gowon emphasized the importance of the nation’s unity, saying that any attempt to strip local governments of their powers should be dismissed.
