Igbo Group Urges Wike, G-5 Governors, To Endorse Obi As Their Preferred Candidate

Igbo group has urged Wike and other G-5 governors to adopt Obi as their preferred candidate.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the five aggrieved Governors within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), popularly known as the G5, have been asked to support the 2023 ambition of the flagbearer of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The governors, who are currently in London, United Kingdom, for a strategic meeting, are expected to conclude on a preferred candidate before making their choice public on January 5, 2023.

The aggrieved governors; Nyesom Wike (Rivers State), Seyi Makinde (Oyo State), Samuel Ortom (Benue State), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia State), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu State), took a stand against supporting the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

After their meeting on Tuesday, the governors have totally ruled out any chances of supporting Atiku’s presidential bid in 2023 and are set to choose between Obi or the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu.

However, a group in the South-East, Igbo Think Thank, called on the PDP governors to adopt the LP flagbearer as their preferred candidate ahead of the 2023 polls.

The Chairman of the group’s Board of Trustees, Prof. Madubuike Ezeibe, made the call on Wednesday during the fourth edition of the Igbo International Christmas Retreat organised by the Igbo Think Tank and Nzuko Ndigbo.

He said Obi remained the most favored of the presidential candidates in the 2023 election based on the qualities Nigerians are looking for in a future president.

Ezeibe, therefore, appealed to Nigerians to support the South-East in its quest to produce the country’s president in the forthcoming election.

He said, “We are Igbo and have to promote our own. Think of age, and mental capability, he is not comparable with others. We are insisting that Nigeria should support a president of South-East extraction.

“In 1999 the current political dispensation with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, then we went to North with former president Musa Yaradu, unfortunately, he died and former President Goodluck Jonathan completed his tenure and power went back to North again for them to complete their turn.

“We are saying that the Igbos should be supported to produce a president.

“I’m advising the G5 governors to adopt Obi, because he we formerly of the PDP. If the G5 adopt him and PDP National Assembly members accept to work with him if he wins the election, that means the G5 has won because they will succeed in bringing the presidency to the South, while the chairmanship of the party can remain in the North. That’s a clever way of getting what they want.”
