Eko Hot Blog reports that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has reiterated his call for the resignation of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu.
Over the past few months, Wike has spearheaded an effort to force Ayu’s resignation.
The governor has argued that the party chairman had promised to resign if a northerner emerged the presidential candidate.
But Ayu has refused to resign despite the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a northerner, as the PDP nominee for president.
In a major escalation, Wike and his allies pulled out of the party’s presidential campaign council in September.
They also shunned the flag-off of the PDP presidential campaign on Monday.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Wike’s Special Adviser on Media, Kelvin Ebiri, the governor rejected suggestions by some party members for Ayu to resign after the presidential election in February if Atiku wins.
According to the statement, Wike spoke on Wednesday when he hosted Cross River PDP candidates running for governorship, senatorial, house of representatives, and state house of assembly seats in the 2023 elections.
The Rivers governor said expecting Ayu to resign after the general election would amount to foolishness.
“He [national chairman, Ayu] said, if the presidential candidate comes from the north, he will resign, which means he has had this in mind. Now, the thing has come to reality. Now resign, ‘no’. And people are saying ‘go and talk to Wike’,” the statement quoted Wike as saying.
“I’ve accepted the presidential candidate. I have accepted the vice-presidential candidate. What’s the problem again? You, fulfil your part.
“Let the south have something; that is all I’m preaching. You cannot have presidential candidate, national chairman, director-general of the campaign.
“This is the period the power game is being played. If you don’t have it now, forget it. If anybody tells you to let (Iyorchia) Ayu resign after the election is conducted, then you are a foolish person.
“This is the time decision is being made. This is the time the presidential candidate, national chairman, and the leader of the campaign will sit. When the election is won in February before the president is sworn in, decisions would have been made.”
