EKO HOT BLOG reports that Nigerian singer, Simisola Ogunleye-Kosoko, better known as Simi, has criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the amount spent on the recently concluded general elections in Nigeria.
She argued that the 300 billion naira budget allocated for the elections could have been used to improve the country’s healthcare and education systems.
Taking to Twitter on Monday, Simi suggested that INEC should have simply selected the winners of the elections instead of spending such a large amount of money on a rigged election. She tweeted, “300 billion naira budget for this joke of an election. @inecnigeria you might as well have given them back the money to fix some hospitals and schools and just used a finger to point at the people you wanted to select.”
Simi further criticized the lack of action taken to address the issue of election rigging. She said, “The blatant rigging and nobody in power addressed it. Lol. Giant problem of Africa. Anybody that saw the disenfranchisement and didn’t condemn it better keep their prayers for Nigeria. She doesn’t need prayers from people like you.”
The Nigerian general elections held on February 25, 2023, followed by the Governorship polls 2 weeks later, and for Simi, they were marred by several issues, including allegations of vote-buying, voter suppression, and violence.
The electoral commission came under heavy criticism from various quarters for the conduct of the elections, with many calling for an overhaul of the electoral process in Nigeria.
Simi’s comments have since generated reactions from Nigerians on social media, with many expressing their support for her views.
