2023 Presidency: Call Them YORULANIANS – Shehu Sani On Yoruba, Fulani Alliance

  • “Yoruba/Fulani harmony is called YORULANI and the disciples of it are called YORULANIANS” –Sani

As preparations for the 2023 general election begin, albeit implicitly, politicians, in their usual disposition, have begun making moves.

The maneuvering, the horsetrading, the gimmicks, the fence-mending, the alliance-forging, the fora and public events whose discourse are garnished with condiments of political correctness are all aimed at strategically positioning themselves towards the actualisation of the political ambition and consolidation of public appeal.

One of such moves is what we have witnessed in the last one week from former Lagos state governor, who many have speculated to be eyeing the highest political office in the land, the presidency.

The All Progressives Congress national leader turned 69 on Monday and the annual colloquium which has been held since 2009 to mark his birthday took place in Kano.

The choice of location did not evade the intrusive gaze and ponderous minds of some meticulous citizens, especially those on popular microblogging site, who opined that the choice might not be unconnected to the presidential aspiration of Tinubu and the attendant need to buy over northerners and win their support as it has become a convention in the country that anyone who wants to become president of Nigeria must enjoy massive support from the north and garner substantial votes from the region.

Weighing in on the development on Monday, former Kaduna senator and good governance advocate, said the Yorubas and Fulanis have entered into an alliance.

Tinubu

In what appeared to be a swipe at Tinubu, Sani said the dynasty came into existence on Monday, 29 March, being Tinubu’s birthday and day of the colloquium.

He said the both ethnic group will be called YORULANI while their followers and apostles will be tagged YORULANIANS.

Shehu Sani is known for his witty posts on social media, he’s also popular for speaking in veiled terms and parables when criticising the government.

“Yoruba/Fulani harmony is called YORULANI and the disciples of it are called YORULANIANS… the dynasty was founded in Kano today” he tweeted on Monday.

However, mixed reactions have begun to trail the former senator’s post on purported alliance between the Yoruba and the Fulani.

His remark didn’t go down well with some people, especially those of Yoruba extraction. They countered Sani assertion, saying he was wrong to lump all Yoruba together in what is seemingly the quest of one man for power.

They opined that Tinubu and his cohorts, and not the entire Yoruba tribe, are the only ones in alliance with the Fulanis.

Below are some reactions.
