EDITOR’S PICK:
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Former Kaduna Central lawmaker and activist, Senator Shehu Sani has cautioned against the adoption of a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the 2023 presidential election.
He opined that in a multi-religious setting like Nigeria, having the President and Vice President from the same religion is a recipe for disaster.
Sani spoke against the backdrop of the latest political developments in the country as attention shifts to who presidential candidates that have emerged across political parties will choose as their running mates.
This online media gathered that while other parties have produced candidates as well, the two largest parties in Nigeria – the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have Muslim candidates as their flagbearers.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is the APC candidate while Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is the PDP candidate and this has sparked debates, particularly on social media about the desirability or otherwise of producing a Muslim Vice Presidential candidate.
Adding his voice to the debate, Sani in a Twitter post on Friday morning said a Muslim-Muslim ticket should be avoided because of the religious plurality of Nigeria.
EDITOR’S PICK
He wrote:
“The Presidential candidates should respect the religious diversity of this country when picking a running mate. Of what benefit is there to temporarily win the election and permanently lose the country. The president and vice from one religious faith is a recipe for disaster.”
