- The race for the next President of the federal Republic of Nigeria is fast heating up.
- As things currently stand, a number of prominent Nigerians and politicians have openly disclosed their desire to be Nigeria’s next president.
- However, they need to get tickets from a registered political party, contest the primaries, and then come out to campaign if they are chosen as the party’s flag bearer.
Two of the biggest political parties in Nigeria are the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressive Congress (APC), and it would only be normal to expect one of the two to produce the next leader of the most populous black nation.
Now that the 2023 Presidential campaign is not officially underway, EKO HOT BLOG would be looking at 12 of the biggest names in Nigeria’s two biggest political parties that may wish to be part of the race to become Nigeria’s next President in about two years time.
- Bola Ahmed Tinubu:
The APC chieftain is one of the favourites to run for the 2023 Presidency under APC. Although he may have not publicly expressed his desire, but he is seen as a strong replacement for President Muhammadu Buhari.
- Atiku Abubakar:
He was the former Vice president during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure. He lost to Buhari the last time, and would now be considered to replace the president, having been seen as a strong candidate for the PDP.
- Nasir El-Rufai:
The current Governor of Kanduna State and former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory is also a strong name. He will have to struggle for the ticket with Tinubu under APC.
- Rotimi Amaechi
The current Minister of Transportation and former Governor of Rivers State is a household name. Tinubu and El-Rufai will be his strongest opponents for the APC ticket.
- Peter Obi:
The former Governor of Anambra State and 2019 Vice Presidential Candidate, may become Atiku’s vice or probably run for the position.
- Aminu Tambuwal:
The former Governor of Sokoto State; Speaker of the House of Representatives and member of the House of Representatives, will likely go for the PDP ticket, and will give Atiku and others a run for their money.
- Bukola Saraki:
The former President of the Senate and ex-Governor of Kwara State looks refreshed, and it would not be surprising to see him target the Presidency come 2023.
- Yemi Osinbajo:
The current vice President of Nigeria may be seen as an outsider for the Presidency, but looking at his impressive display already, it would not be completely out of place to back him.
- Yahaya Bello:
The current Governor of Kogi State has publicly shown his desire. He is young and energetic, but would first have to go through Tinubu and other strong names in APC.
- Ahmed Sani Yerima:
The former Governor of Zamfara state, who also served as Senator for Zamfara West and Deputy Minority Leader in the Senate. He is a known Presidential hopeful and just like Yahaya Bello and others, would first have to win the APC ticket.
- Nyesom Wike:
The current Governor of Rivers State has shown he is a strong leader, and while he may find Atiku as a strong opposition in PDP, it would be risky not to back him.
- Rabiu Kwankwaso:
The former Governor of Kano and former Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, may likely go for the APC ticket as he seek to become President of Nigeria come 2023 elections.
