Eko Hot Blog reports that Nyesome Wike, Rivers State Governor, was conspicuously absent at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign flag-off in Akwa-Ibom, Uyo, on Monday.
Like Wike, Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, and Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, shunned the event.
The four PDP governors are the River governor’s allies in his bid to force the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.
In September, they announced their withdrawal from the Atiku presidential campaign due to the matter.
Wike, who lost the PDP presidential ticket to Atiku in a May primary election, and his allies argued that it is unfair for the party to have a northern presidential candidate and National Chairman.
However, Ayu has vowed to stay on as the party’s top chief and Atiku’s spokespersons have suggested that the presidential candidate has no appetite or power to force the party chairman’s removal.
The PDP campaign flag-off went on at the Nest of Champions Stadium in Uyo despite Wike’s camp’s absence.
PDP chieftains, including the party’s presidential candidate and ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, his running mate, and Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, were present.
Other attendees include Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, his Adamawa counterpart, Ahmadu Fintiri, and the former lawmaker representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye among others.
Atiku, Okowa, Ayu, and Emmanuel took turns to address the crowd in Uyo, promising to rescue the country from its many problems should the PDP be elected into office next year.
The PDP campaign came barely four months to the presidential election on February 25, 2023.
