U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Nigeria will be placed on a watchlist for alleged violations of religious freedom, claiming that Christians in the country are being “slaughtered” by Muslims.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a social media post on Friday, Trump said Nigeria would be designated a “Country of Particular Concern” under the U.S. Department of State’s framework for monitoring religious persecution.

He alleged that “radical Islamists” were responsible for the killing of thousands of Christians in Nigeria.

However, the Nigerian government has consistently dismissed such accusations, maintaining that the country’s conflicts are complex and often driven by resource competition rather than religion.
Analysts have also argued that portraying Nigeria’s internal strife as a purely religious issue oversimplifies a broader socio-economic problem.
The “Country of Particular Concern” label was established under the 1998 International Religious Freedom Act to identify nations involved in systematic religious persecution.

Normally, such designations come after recommendations from the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom and the State Department, but Trump’s declaration appears to bypass this process.
Several Republican lawmakers, including Representatives Riley Moore and Tom Cole, as well as Senator Ted Cruz, have applauded the move, describing it as a step toward global accountability.
Critics, however, caution that the decision could heighten diplomatic tensions and ignore deeper political and economic roots of Nigeria’s insecurity.
