Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the 2027 presidential election will not be a contest between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but a battle between Nigerians and the APC.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Governor Makinde blamed the APC-led federal government for the worsening economic conditions and rising insecurity across the country. He asserted that Nigerians would hold the party accountable in the next general elections.
“The 2027 election won’t be PDP versus APC; it would be Nigerians versus APC. Mark my word on that,” Makinde said confidently during the interview.
The governor noted that the economy under President Bola Tinubu’s administration has continued to wobble, while security challenges persist without effective solutions. He described the next election as a judgment day for the APC government.
Makinde, a prominent PDP figure, also spoke on the internal missteps that cost the PDP its chance in the 2023 presidential election. He pointed to a lack of inclusiveness and a power imbalance within the party, especially in the build-up to the poll.
He recalled that the PDP handed its presidential ticket, the position of national chairman, and the director general of the presidential campaign to individuals from the northern region, leaving the southern bloc sidelined.
“If the three main influential positions to take us to the election were occupied by the North East, the North Central, and the North West, how do we sell that position all around the country?” Makinde queried.
He emphasized that this exclusion dealt a self-inflicted blow to the party and played a major role in its 2023 electoral defeat.

To back his point, Makinde referenced how Iyorchia Ayu from the North Central served as PDP National Chairman, Atiku Abubakar from the North East emerged as the party’s presidential candidate, and Aminu Tambuwal from the North West was appointed the campaign director general—all key roles occupied by northerners during the election season.
Makinde assured that the PDP had learned from its mistakes and would not repeat the same errors in 2027. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to justice, inclusion, and national unity moving forward.
