South Africa’s police watchdog, Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), has confirmed the death of a 28-year-old Nigerian in the custody of police in South Africa.

The man, whose name was given as Victor Ude, died in a police cell where he was being held in Cape Town according to a statement yesterday.

The IPID statement said Ude died on Wednesday, adding that investigation into his death has already commenced.

IPID’s spokesperson, Moses Dlamini, said Ude was reportedly arrested for an altercation with his former girlfriend, revealing that the police said the lady accused Ude of drug abuse.

Upon his arrest and detention at the police station in Lwandle area of Cape Town, Ude was found hanging by his sweater after midday.
