29 Suspects Escape From Police Cell In Abia

A total of twenty-nine criminals have allegedly escaped from detention at the Central Police Station (CSP), Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.

According to reports the suspects escaped on Saturday night, after luring the cell guard to open the doors of the cell by pretending they wanted to visit the restrooms.

It was reported that after the cell guard obliged to their request, some of the prison guards overpowered him, causing all twenty-nine to leave the cell.

Although, twenty of the escapees have been arrested and only nine are still at large as police are on the lookout.

Further enquiries revealed that like most holding cells and prisons in the country, the Umuahia CPS cell was overcrowded and overstretched, and they are reluctant to receive new suspects due to fear of COVID-19.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abia Command, Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the incident and called on members of the public to be on the lookout for the fleeing suspects and report to the nearest police station.
