EDITOR’S PICK:
Waking up with bad breath can be very uncomfortable especially if you don’t stay alone. However, you shouldn’t feel too concerned as this condition is common and very much treatable. But before looking for treatments, it is important to know the possible causes of this condition to know the right solution you need.
Dry mouth and poor oral hygiene are the two biggest causes of morning breath (bad breath in the morning). Other causes include certain foods and lifestyle choices.
1. You don’t observe good oral care
Yes, you heard me right! This is one of the biggest causes of bad breath in the morning. Not brushing or flossing properly gets food stuck in your teeth and on your tongue. Bacterias then break down these foods and this result in morning breath.
You should brush your teeth properly every morning and before bedtime. This will help remove food remains from your mouth
2. Dry mouth
If you brush and floss properly but still have morning breathe, then a dry mouth is most likely to be the cause. Saliva helps remove bacteria that cause bad breath, however, the mouth produces less saliva at night, which can cause morning breath.
Your mouth can also become dry due to certain medications you’re using, speak to your doctor for alternative drugs if this is your case, and make sure you hydrate properly.
3. Taking foods with distinct odour at night
You can’t eat foods like raw onions and garlic to bed and expect to wake up with a fresh and lovely breath the next day. Your breath will still stink even if you brush before bed. The best is just to avoid those foods in the evening.
