Typhoid fever is a severe infection characterized by ulceration and inflammation of the intestines. The bacteria that contaminates food or water and causes typhoid is called Salmonella typhosa.
It happens a lot to some people in Nigeria due to the kind of environment we live in. The bacteria that causes typhoid fever can spread among people living in the same environment.
Well, in this article on EKO HOT BLOG we would be looking at some unhealthy habits that can cause typhoid fever.
1. Drinking Contaminated Water
Some of us drink contaminated water, either knowingly or unknowingly. There are different ways the water we drink can be contaminated. The water we drink can be contaminated by our feces. Our feces are concentrated with a lot of bacteria.
A water system that supplies water to a neighborhood can be contaminated by the waste products evacuated from our bodies. When people drink this water or use it to cook, they start having typhoid fever.
This is why we should ensure that when building our houses, the sewage systems of our toilets should be far away from the water supply systems. When this bacteria from our excreta mix with water in the ground, it can survive for weeks in the water.
2. Washing Foods and food with bad water
People also get typhoid by eating fruits or foods that have been washed or cooked with contaminated water. Some foods that soak a lot of water, such as beans and red meat, if washed or cooked with contaminated water, can cause typhoid fever.
Eating fish such as catfish that have been taken from ponds contaminated with feces or urine can also cause typhoid fever.
3. Not maintaining proper hygiene
People also get infected with typhoid bacteria by not washing their hands after using contaminated toilets.
