34 technical college students suspended
Thirty-four students of Government Technical College, Ewet, Akwa Ibom State, have been suspended indefinitely for allegedly masterminding the crisis in the school.
The government has shut the school following destruction of property.
Commissioner for Education Prof. Nse Essien, in a statement yesterday, said the students, on February 19, became unruly, destroyed school property and caused injuries to policemen and workers.

He said: “The Government Technical College, Ewet, is hereby shut indefinitely and students are advised to vacate the school premises with immediate effect.
“Workers are, however, advised to continue to report for duty.”
Essien added the 34 students, whose names were with the security agencies, would not return even when the school reopens.
According to him, the students would pay for damaging the school property.
He decried the student’s behaviour, saying the divisional police officer (DPO) was injured in the riot.
As I speak, the DPO is in a critical condition following injuries he sustained in an effort to quell the unrest.
A member of staff was operated on his left eye while another sustained injuries.
“As a responsible government, we cannot watch our schools be turned into a den of hooligans,” he added.
The commissioner promised the government would take decisive action to ensure there was no recurrence.
