37 Traders Involve in Kwara Boat Accident

Less than seven months after a boat accident claimed over 200 lives in Gbajibo, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, another boat mishap in the Gbajibo-Mudi community has resulted in the death of 37 traders.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the victims, mostly from Niger State, were returning home from the weekly market in Gbajibo when the accident occurred on Thursday.

According to reliable sources, the boat, with a capacity of about 100 passengers, was overloaded at the time of the incident. The overflowing river also contributed to the accident.
The Chairman of Kaiama Local Government, Abubakar Abdullahi, and the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Omar, visited the community to offer their condolences.
A former chairman of the local government, Mahmoud Gbajibo, confirmed the incident, stating that the community’s rescue team recovered 37 bodies from the river.
He said, “The boat accident occurred at about 6pm on Thursday. The traders closed from the market in Gbajigbo Mudi and were returning to their various communities in Niger state when the tragic incident occurred.
“37 corpses were recovered from the river while many others were rescued from the river.
“The cause of the accident can be attributed to overloading of the boat while the water volume also contributed to it.
“Right now, the chairman of the local government and the Emir of Kaiama are in Gbajigbo Mudi community to sympathise with the people.”
Attempts to obtain confirmation from the Kwara State Police Command regarding the incident proved unsuccessful on Saturday.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, could not be reached by telephone, while the state Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, did not respond to calls or a WhatsApp message seeking comment.

Similarly, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, did not answer calls made to his phone and had not responded to a WhatsApp message sent on Saturday by the time of this report’s submission.
