When someone complains of heartburn, the first question doctors ask is, What did you eat? This is because eating certain foods like coffee, tomatoes and sodas is one of the most common causes of heartburn.
But you might wonder why you have heartburn even when you have avoided all these foods. Most people don’t know that there are other causes of heartburn asides from food.
Heartburn is a burning sensation felt in the chest or throat which is caused by acid rising from the stomach.
1. Overeating
The foods we eat pass into our stomach through a tube called the oesophagus. When you eat too much your stomach extends and swells. The muscle that connects your oesophagus to your stomach will not close properly and thus can’t stop foods and juices to rise to your throat or chest. To prevent this, please stop eating when you feel satiated.
2. Bad eating habits
Sometimes it isn’t the foods we eat that cause heartburn but the way we eat. Some people cultivate bad habits of eating too fast while lying down to eat or too close to bedtime. To prevent this you should eat at a normal pace and at least 2 to 3 hours before going to bed.
3. Overweight or obese
People who are overweight have a higher risk of suffering from heartburn and acid reflux. You should maintain a healthy weight if you feel like this is a likely cause of your heartburn.
