Many people love eating yam either in its ponded form, solid form or even its powdered form which when poured and steered in a hot water hardens to what is commonly known as “Amala”. However, most people who are fond of eating yam are not aware of the medical conditions that can be managed by consuming it on a regular basis.
Water yam, bitter yam, white yam and yellow yam are some of the types of yam that are available for human consumption, and they are loaded with a lot of nutrients that can help to keep the body strong, and even manage some health issues.
1. Cancer
Eating yam can help manage the ailment called cancer because it has a high proportion of vitamin A which the body can utilize to prevent abnormal growth of the cells in the lungs which are otherwise known as lung cancer. Yam also has a lot of fibre that assists in the proper breakdown of foods in the stomach.
2. Hair loss
For people who care so much about their hair, eating yam on a daily basis can help to prevent hair loss because it contains active compounds that make the flow of blood easy through the blood vessels of the head and its scalp. In addition, the minerals in yam also help the hair to remain soft and retain its smooth texture while at the same time preventing it from becoming dehydrated.
3. The ‘Menopause effect‘
For women approaching their menopause or menopausal age, regular consumption of yam can help to lower or reduce the signs that accompany menopause because it contains some powerful steroids that can help the body to regulate the hormones that trigger menopausal symptoms.
4. Weak immune system
The high proportion of vitamins and antioxidants that exists in yams boost the immune system to fight off infection and also help to address free radicals in the body, and also reduce the risk of having Diabetes. The chemical compounds in yam also prevent the conversion of the carbohydrates in yam to fat when digested in the stomach.

It is critical to observe moderation while consuming foods including yam because excess of it can cause the body to become heavily weighed down due to the high fibre content on yam, and this is the reason why a lot of people who eat too much-cooked yam or pounded yam complain of their stomach being full and heavy, although it digests easily.
