Yams are a type of tuber that is frequently confused with sweet potatoes. Compared to sweet potatoes, yams are less sweet and more starchy. They have white, yellow, purple, or pink flesh, similar to sweet potatoes.
The yam’s color depends on how ripe it is. White yams are high in potassium, while yams with yellow, orange, or purple flesh are higher in vitamins, complex carbs, and antioxidants.
In this article on EKO HOT BLOG, we would be looking at some medical conditions that eating yam regularly can prevent.
1. High blood sugar
It has been shown in a number of animal experiments that yams improve blood sugar management. It is hypothesized that the effects are due to the foods’ high resistant starch and dietary fiber contents.
2. Cancer
Cancer is caused by aberrant cell development. Oxidative damage caused by free radicals contributes to cancer as well. Among other antioxidants, yams include vitamin C, flavonoids, and phenols.
These antioxidants have anti-cancerous properties. Antioxidant vitamins contribute in preventing the development of cancer cells by reducing the damage that free radicals do to organs.
According to a study, antioxidants inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Perhaps even malignant cells are killed by them.
3. Indigestion and constipation
The resistant starch found in yams performs comparable functions to soluble fibers. As a result, it passes undigested through the stomach and intestines.
As a result, it helps to support good digestion by supporting the beneficial gut flora and increasing the levels of digestive enzymes. So yams are a great food to eat to improve digestion.
4. Obesity
Yams are rich in fiber and calories. Studies have demonstrated that fiber helps people lose weight. Yam roots are tasty and aid in weight loss. Fiber is progressively absorbed by the body. They extend the time that you feel full as a result. As a result, they cut back on cravings and binge eating.
Finally, they put a halt to unhealthy weight gain. Furthermore, fiber helps to improve gut health. Yams support good bacteria and stop the spread of harmful microbes.
