Over 4 Million Children In Northeast, Northwest Nigeria Suffer From Malnutrition

The Federal Government has revealed that over four million children in Nigeria’s Northeast and Northwest regions are currently suffering from malnutrition.

This alarming statistic was shared by Ladidi Bako-Aiyebusi, Director of the Nutrition Department at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, during a five-day strategic meeting in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the meeting, which runs from Tuesday to Saturday, includes nutrition experts, stakeholders, and civil society organizations (CSOs).

Organized in collaboration with Civil Society-Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) and other partners, the event aims to tackle the nation’s critical nutrition challenges and establish clear policy guidelines.

In her opening remarks, Bako-Aiyebusi underscored the severity of Nigeria’s malnutrition crisis, describing it as a “triple burden” that includes widespread macro and micronutrient deficiencies, undernutrition, and overnutrition, all of which profoundly affect the country’s health and socio-economic development.

4 Million Children Suffer Malnutrition

“In addition, the 2021 National Food Consumption and Micronutrient Survey report shows that nearly 4.4 million children in the Northeast and Northwest regions are malnourished.

“Identified causes of malnutrition include inadequate access to food, poor food consumption, improper feeding and caring practices, economic and political structures, low economic status, inadequate health-seeking behaviors and low level of education among the populace,” Bako-Aiyebusi said.
