EDITOR’S PICK:
Typhoid fever is a worldwide threat which affects about 27 million lives or more every year. That’s why experts are always advising people, especially those who live in a developing country like Nigeria to work towards preventing this illness.
Our best option is to stay away from foods and drinks contaminated with typhoid-causing bacteria and infected persons. Even vaccines can only partially prevent typhoid.
1. Wash your hands often
Washing your hands in hot, soapy water is the best way to control this infection and should be carried out countless times daily especially if you’re staying in an area where typhoid fever is prevalent. Wash your hands before preparing or eating meals too.
2. Don’t drink untreated water
Many people just carelessly drink any water they find around them, whether clean or not. That is unsafe especially if you’re living in areas where typhoid fever infection is high. It is safer to drink only canned or bottled water, carbonated drinks, wine and beer.
3. Stay away from raw fruits and vegetables
These commodities might have been washed with contaminated water. Don’t eat fruits or vegetables you can’t peel without properly washing them.
4. Eat more hot foods
Foods stored or served at room temperature might be harbouring typhoid-causing bacteria so it is better to say away from them.
