Nigeria To Reopen Embassy In North Korea After Pandemic Closure

Nigeria plans to reopen its embassy in Pyongyang, North Korea, which was shut down in early 2021 due to COVID-19.

Patrick Imologhome, Nigeria’s Charge d’Affaires to North Korea, confirmed the development during a December 11 meeting with Aleksandr Matsegora, Russia’s Ambassador to North Korea, held to discuss diplomatic relations and issues on the Korean Peninsula.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to a statement from the Russian Embassy, the meeting involved a “thorough exchange of views,” with both diplomats expressing optimism about Nigeria’s plans. Matsegora extended his support, pledging assistance to ensure the Nigerian embassy in Pyongyang operates effectively.

North Korea’s stringent pandemic measures, including a full border closure in 2020, prompted the withdrawal of many foreign embassies. However, with its borders reopening in August 2023, nations like Nigeria are now moving to reestablish diplomatic missions.

The reopening comes amidst international scrutiny of Nigeria-North Korea relations. In 2022, a UN report alleged that Nigeria had considered purchasing $3.5 million worth of arms from Haegeumgang Trading Corporation, a North Korean entity linked to the Korean People’s Army.

Such a transaction would have violated global sanctions imposed by the UN, EU, and US. While Nigeria did not confirm the allegations, its renewed diplomatic presence may draw fresh attention to these ties.

Analysts suggest that resuming operations in Pyongyang aligns with Nigeria’s broader diplomatic strategy to strengthen relations with various nations and enhance its global influence.

Matsegora lauded Nigeria’s efforts and reiterated his commitment to supporting the diplomatic corps in Pyongyang, emphasizing their cohesion and collaborative spirit.

As Nigeria reopens its embassy, its actions will likely be monitored closely by the international community, given the geopolitical sensitivities surrounding North Korea.
