EDITOR’S PICK:
We all want to improve the quality of our lives to a significant degree. Everyone wants to be valued, loved and respected by their contemporaries, family members and others in their immediate environment.
But it is important to understand that love and respect isn’t a virtue a person is automatically treated with, it requires the deliberate practice of certain attitudes that are considered virtuous and generally accepted in society.
1. Being respectful
Respect is a virtue whose societal importance cannot be overemphasized. Treating people with respect in your words and action will make them be at peace with you, and it will also make them treat you rightly. Respect is usually displayed when you greet others and appreciate their opinion and philosophies. It’s an attitude you should adopt.
2. Be tolerant in your dealings with others
The truth is that; not everyone will treat you nicely even when you are respectful. Some people will get on your nerves by doing things that aren’t appealing to your interest or personality, when this becomes the case, it then becomes vital to be tolerant in your dealings with them. Doing otherwise might put you in a disadvantageous position of violence, abuse or something worse, hence; it becomes necessary to be a person of patience, or better still; walk away from the situation if you can’t handle the emotional pressure.
3. Not being judgmental or quick at concluding on issues
Studies have shown that the majority of the people who are quick at concluding an issue usually end up making mistakes and igniting the wrath of others, especially those treated unfairly. Before you address any issue, it becomes necessary to first evaluate every angle thoroughly before commenting. Doing otherwise might prompt you to make several mistakes which might amount to biased judgment.
4. Having an unforgiving attitude
I know it is quite difficult to let go of the hurts and embarrassment others have caused you, but you still have to forgive in other to be at peace with yourself. Forgiveness is a self-healing therapy that will improve the quality of your life and will also make you live in satisfaction and good health as well. Studies have shown that the majority of the people who have forgiveness issues usually live in bitterness and they most likely suffer poor mental health.
5. Avoid argument and embrace discussion
I understand how difficult it is to remain defenceless in any argument, especially when the other person seems dogged in their opinion and unwilling to listen to others. When you encounter people of this sort, it becomes pivotal not to engage in an argument with them but to push for a mutual discussion.

Engaging in an argument can most likely escalate to violence which can lead to a more detrimental outcome if caution isn’t adhered to. In essence, avoid conversing with people that are fond of raising an argument over any issue and accommodate people that are willing to have a discussion.
