EDITOR’S PICK:
As a parent, it is your responsibility to provide the necessary things that are essential for the development of your children in every ramification of life. This involves the practice of teaching them the etiquette of life which includes responding positively to people and situations, being moral conscious and diligent in their academic pursuit and also adopting good values.
1. Respect for themselves and others
A child should be taught the relevance of possessing a healthy sense of self-respect and self-worth. Educating your child on the need to behave in ways that are socially acceptable and also respecting the personality of others will make them accountable to themselves and others.
2. Independence
Assisting your children with their needs is good, but teaching them to be independent, most especially on slight things is the best thing to do. For instance, teaching your children to tie their shoes or wear their clothes by themselves will make them tackle these responsibilities properly in your absence. Self-sufficiency is a vital lesson that will make your children self-reliant in future.
3. Critical thinking
Another important value to teach your child is the need to adopt critical thinking in solving problems, be it an academic problem or not. This can be achieved by exposing them to puzzle and strategy games, encouraging them to examine themselves and the world around them – and teaching them never to rely on assumptions or speculations. Training your child to think critically to solve problems will help them become self-reliant and smart in their dealings with others.
4. Emotional development and self-expression
Training your child to be emotionally mature and expressive will help improve their self-confidence and social life. Teaching them how to handle peer group pressure and other negative situations they find themselves in will enhance their relationship with people and make them more tolerant. It is also important as a parent to create an enabling atmosphere where your children will be free to express themselves. Doing this will increase their self-confidence.
5. Managing resources, most especially money
Educating your child on the need to be prudent in managing resources is a teaching that will make them economical and conscious of their property.
