EDITOR’S PICK:
It is common knowledge that if you are invited for a job, especially a prestigious and high-profile one, courtesy demands you put up attitudes that portray professionalism and are in line with the company’s ethics and standards.
Studies have shown that most people get rejected for a job during the process of interview, not necessarily because they aren’t qualified, but because they lack the etiquette and right attitude.
1. Showing up late
The idea of showing up late to an interview whose scheduled time has already been told to you is a wrong impression that might discourage your employer from hiring you. Appearing late for an interview in a company that prioritizes punctuality is unexcusable and can make them reject your application.
2. Dressing in an unprofessional or provoking manner
Dressing in a style that doesn’t befit the job you are being interviewed for, or appearing too stylish and fancy might only reveal to your employer that you might not be serious with the job when employed. It is good to dress impressively, but wearing extremely expensive adornments to a job that portrays simplicity might discourage your employer from considering you.
3. Giving negative remarks about your former place of work
The attitude of speaking negatively about your former boss or the company will only reveal you as a cynical person who will likely find a reason to complain and nag when eventually employed. Even if the working situation in your former place of work was hostile and oppressive, it is still irrational to disclose it to your current employer. Acting otherwise might make them think negatively of you as well.
4. Focusing on your mobile phone or other forms of distractions
Pressing your mobile phone or reading a magazine or novel during an active interview shows a lack of focus and dedication, and such an impression can make your employer think low of you. The idea of pressing your phone or doing social media during an interview will make your employer think you might end up ignoring your job for your phone when retained.
5. Exhibiting poor body language.
Body language and gestures are very important in an interview. The way you are positioned will either convince your employer to consider you or not.
