Even though diabetes has no cure at present, people living with this medical condition are often advised to take medications and engage in exercise to lower their blood sugar levels. However, it is vital to know that what you eat can also affect your blood sugar level.
Eating sugary, fatty and fried foods raises blood sugar hence might make the medications you’re taking and your exercising seem ineffective. What then should diabetic patients eat?
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid which helps to reduce the enzymes in the stomach and increases insulin sensitivity. It is advisable to drink 20 grams of apple cider vinegar in 40 grams of water before eating to reduce blood sugar spikes.
2. Leafy vegetables
Leafy greens like spinach, kale, chard and lettuce are high in fibre and other nutrients like vitamin A and magnesium which can help lower blood sugar levels. Eating 1.35 servings of leafy greens will reduce your risk of having type 2 diabetes by 14%
3. Cocao
Cacao seeds are high in antioxidants and flavanol which help to regulate how the body produces glucose hence stabilizing blood sugar levels even in those people who already have diabetes.
4. Whole grains
Instead of eating white grains which are carbohydrates and can cause blood sugar spikes. It is better to shop for whole grains like quinoa and millet which help stabilize blood sugar levels.
5. Eggs
Even though eggs contain high cholesterol, they have been researched to have no negative effect on diabetes. Eggs help to increase fullness and reduce cravings.
