  • PDP governors, led by Governor Bala Mohammed, have rejected Atiku Abubakar’s new opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
  • The governors confirmed their support for Setonji Koshoedo as Acting National Secretary, deepening internal party disputes.
  • Atiku’s coalition, involving Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai, aims to unseat President Tinubu, with talks of possibly joining the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have said they will not join the new opposition group formed by Atiku Abubakar.

The governors, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, made this clear during a meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday. They said the PDP will not enter into any alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

During the meeting, they also supported Setonji Koshoedo, the party’s Deputy National Secretary, as the Acting National Secretary, increasing the ongoing disagreement over who holds the position.

Recently, Atiku Abubakar, PDP’s former presidential candidate, announced the creation of a new political coalition. The group is said to include Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, among others.

Atiku said the goal of the coalition is to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.

El-Rufai recently left the ruling APC to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He said the APC no longer allows fair participation since Tinubu became president.

Adewale Adebayo, who ran for president under the SDP, said Atiku and Obi are talking with the party about joining. He believes that if they follow the SDP’s rules, they can beat Tinubu and the APC.

Meanwhile, Buba Galadima, a top member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), claimed that El-Rufai is only holding a place for Atiku in the SDP in case PDP doesn’t give him the 2027 presidential ticket.
