7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Port Vila, Vanuatu
A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck near Port Vila, Vanuatu, on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake initially hit 37 kilometres (22.9 miles) from the capital at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles).

Later reports revised the depth to 43 kilometres (26.7 miles), followed by a magnitude 5.5 aftershock in the same area.
Social media footage showed damaged buildings in Port Vila, including embassies from the US, France, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, with buckled windows and collapsed concrete pillars, as reported by Reuters. However, there were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities.
In the aftermath, Vanuatu government websites went offline, and phone lines for public agencies, including the police, were not operational.
Social media accounts for the country’s geohazards agency and the prime minister’s office also remained inactive.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre initially observed waves following the earthquake but later lifted the tsunami threat for nearby regions, including Fiji, the Kermadec Islands, Kiribati, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and Wallis and Futuna.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology and authorities in New Zealand confirmed there was no tsunami threat to their territories.
