EKO HOT BLOG reports that a 75-year-old grandmother, identified as Iforiti Oloro, has been arrested by the police in Ondo State for allegedly setting her son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren ablaze in the Aponmu area of the state capital, Akure.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, has left two family members dead and one in critical condition.
According to a resident in the community, Bayo Adegboyega, the grandmother woke up at midnight while the family slept and set the house on fire. The family’s house was discovered to be on fire at around 2 am, and all the family members were at home. Adegboyega explained that he and other neighbors had to break the windows to gain entry into the house and put out the fire.
He said, “Sadly, by the time we entered, Victor Oloro, his wife Racheal, and their two children, Blessing and Toluwani, had been affected by the fire.”
The family members were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo after being rejected at the state hospital in Akure due to the severity of their burns. Unfortunately, the youngest child died upon arrival, while the parents died on Sunday night. The firstborn child remains in critical condition.
The grandmother reportedly confessed to setting the building on fire because her son and his wife were allegedly starving her of food. It is unclear whether she had any mental health issues.
The state police spokesperson, Funmilayo Odunlami Omisanya, confirmed the incident and said the divisional police officer in the community was still awaiting details of the incident. “So, I would advise you to give me more time to gather the facts,” she added.
The incident has caused shock and disbelief in the community, with many expressing their condolences to the affected family members. The police have assured the public that they will conduct a thorough investigation on the case.
