774,000 Jobs: NASS Suspends Recruitment Exercise Over Disagreement

The National Assembly has suspended the recruitment of 774,000 Nigerians for the Special Public Works programme under the National Directorate of Employment.

The recruitment, which was meant to ease the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on citizens was suspended following the argument between some lawmakers who engaged in a shouting match with Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo.

Spokesperson for the Senate, Ajibola Basiru made this announcement on Wednesday July 1.

Basiru, who admitted that the recruitment exercise was suspended after a disagreement with Keyamo, noted that the Minister in charge of the Ministry has been ordered before the federal legislature to explain the recruitment modalities.

“In view of the foregoing, the implementation of the programme shall be on hold pending proper briefing of the National Assembly by the Minister of Labour and Productivity,” Basiru said.

President Muhammadu Buhari, approved the engagement of 774, 000 Nigerians under the scheme.

The programme, expected to take off in October this year was aimed at recruiting 1,000 Nigerians in each of the 774 local government areas of the country.

The beneficiary of this employment are to will earn N20,000 as monthly salary for three months.

Ekohotblog reported on Tuesday that the federal lawmakers walked Keyamo out of a hearing following his refusal to apologise after the legislators accused him of raising his voice against them.
